CBD for Anxiety: How can CBD help my pet & me?
As we discussed our April 2024 Issue, although it has not been certified by the FDA, research shows positive evidence that Cannabidiol (CBD) can potentially provide a multitude of health benefits. Some of those potential benefits are helping to ease anxiety, reduce stress, and improve relaxation.
What is anxiety? Anxiety is described as your body’s response to stress. A certain level of anxiety is healthy and normal, helping your body to regulate and respond appropriately in situations. However, excessive anxiety can negatively impact portions of your life, if not all of it. Fortunately, CBD offers potential as an effective, safe, and affordable solution.
CBD potentially eases anxiety by interacting directly with the body’s endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is an internal set of receptors known as CB1 and CB2, situated throughout the body. These receptors play a giant role in regulating sleep, memory, depression, anxiety, pain and stress within the human body. Your body actually produces its own molecules that interact with these receptors. Interestingly CBD can also attach itself to these receptors, allowing the positive benefits of CBD to take effect. Basically, CBD helps improve the endocannabinoid system, which results in relaxation and reduction of anxiety. In humans, the effects of CBD can generally be noticed within 20-30 minutes of utilizing the product, whether topically or orally.
Although there have been limited studies with animals, it is understood that they possess an endocannabinoid system, in which CBD interacts very similarly to humans. Just like us, our pets can experience noise phobia and separation anxiety especially during fireworks and holiday travel plans. Some pets show signs of anxiety regularly, and recent veterinary research has shown daily CBD could be useful. In our pets, the benefits of CBD can be noticed rapidly, just like people, especially when tinctures are used.
There are a few considerations before beginning yourself or your furry companion on CBD. Be mindful of the other medications you both are using and their potential interactions. It has been noted that our pets seem to have more receptors than us; therefore can be much more sensitive to CBD. Starting low and working your way up to the right dose for the desired effect is the safest and best way to begin.
